[Expert Q&A] When is a best time for artificial grass installation?

Thinking about an artificial grass installation usually starts on one of those first sunny days in Surrey. You’re standing in the backyard, staring at a fresh chafer beetle mess or a patch of mud that just won’t dry, and you realize you’re just done with it. The mowing, the mess, the constant maintenance. It’s exhausting.

But before you rush into it, there’s something we always tell our clients: timing actually matters. While we can technically do an artificial grass installation year round in BC, there is a specific window where the results are just better. It’s not just about our schedule; it’s about how the turf itself reacts to the BC weather.

The Science of “Turf Movement”: Why Summer and Winter are tricky

Most people assume turf is static, but it actually moves. It’s a high quality synthetic, which means it expands and contracts based on the temperature. If we ignore this “movement” during an artificial grass installation, you’re basically asking for wrinkles or gaps a few months later.

The Summer Stretch: When the sun is baking your yard in July, the turf fibers and backing expand. It gets soft and slightly longer. If we nail everything down while it’s fully “stretched out,” it’s going to pull hard once the weather cools down. That tension is exactly how you end up with gaps in your seams or edges that start to pull away.

The Winter Shrink: In the dead of January, the material is stiff and contracted. It’s “shrunk” as much as it ever will be. If we fit it perfectly while it’s cold and rigid, the second a 25°C day hits in June, that grass has nowhere to go but up. That’s the #1 cause of those annoying waves or bubbles in the middle of a lawn.

Why Spring is the “Sweet Spot” for your project

This is why right now—April and May—is our favorite time for an artificial grass installation. The temperatures are moderate and neutral. The turf is at its most stable size, meaning it hasn’t fully expanded or shrunk. This allows us to set the tension perfectly, so it has enough “give” to handle the coming summer heat and the winter frost without losing its shape.

There’s also a reality check on the schedule. To be honest, most people don’t pick up the phone until the first real heatwave hits in June. By then, our calendar for artificial grass installation is usually booked solid for two or three months. If you wait until then, you might be looking at a September start date. By getting started now, you ensure the yard is ready and the turf is perfectly settled just in time for BBQ season. You get to actually use your yard in July instead of being on a waiting list.

Ready to beat the summer rush?

If you’re ready to stop the mowing and finally fix those dead patches, don’t wait until the temperatures are spiking. Now is the best window to ensure a flawless, long term fit while the weather is on our side.
